Team Wingnuts (Cheri Domina, Sue Shaw, Sherrie Downing, Nancy Patterson and Maggie Williams) spent 17.5 hours afield in the Great Pond Mtn. Wildlands and Craig Brook Nat’l Fish Hatchery Tuesday, May 28 (with a short foray into Orland Village for dinner). The Birdathon team counted 68 species, with 60+ seen in the Wildlands that day. Sightings ranged from a pair of loons in the mist at dawn on the Dead River, to a scarlet tanager decorating a tall hemlock along Dead River Trail, to multiple magnolia warblers serenading us along the Birding Path. The day ended with six singing whippoorwills! Click here to see our full list.
Downeast Audubon’s Birdathon is an annual fundraiser in which teams compete to count birds, while raising money to send Hancock County kids to nature camp each summer. If you’d like to contribute, it’s not too late! Contact Cheri at info@greatpondtrust.org or call 469-2008.
