September 28, 2012. That’s Geo Atwood cutting the tree initially. In the weeks that followed, numerous volunteers pitched in – Steward Brian Keegstra, Trust members Paul Liebow, Connie Tuller, and Hans Krichels with his crew of kids from Ellsworth. Finally, on Tuesday, October 23, the tree was, in fact, set in concrete.
The first child to climb the tree was a girl from Camden, Liana, who came to the Wildlands with her mother, Theresa Withee, for the annual Trail Run. Theresa demonstrated barefoot trail running for the onlookers, while Liana demonstrated barehanded tree-climbing at the Popple Grove.
