Just a short walk in from the South Gate, the Great Pond Popple Grove calls out to children of all ages. Juicy berries, odd objects to arrange on stumps and rocktops, climbing tree, letterbox, walking trails, and caterpillars galore all adding up to hours of exploration and discovery. Mother Barbara Beyer recently sent pictures and wrote about the Popple Grove: “Hi, I have a couple of photos to submit. They were both taken at the Popple Grove Play area on August 1. As a side note, my boys LOVE that area. They like to climb the tree, but mostly they like checking out all the rocks, bones, shells, feathers, etc. that they find there. We really appreciate having it to play in.” So, bring your kids to the Popple Grove. Send pictures; we’ll post them in this album.

Sunday April 28, 2013. Boy Scouts (Troop #102) and Venture Crew (Troop #1102) from Bucksport and Orland converged on the Wildlands to learn trail maintenance skills and to scout out trails for adoption. Under the guidance of Scoutmaster Dave Burgess, Assistant Scoutmaster Mike Gross, Venture Crew leaders Dan Kircheis and Matt Brown, the kids were raring to go. Scouting Board Member Richard Harriman and his wife Cheryl rounded out the expedition, while Wildlands Steward Brian Keegstra and Trails Expert Jennifer Rieffler provided instruction and guidance.

By the end of the day, the Venture Crew had “adopted” the Esker and Drumlin Paths, and Boy Scout Troop 102 had “adopted” the Oak Hill and East Ridge Path. These Scouts will provide regular seasonal care and maintenance and will manage these paths into the foreseeable future.

Saturday April 27, 2013. Assistant Scoutmaster Paul Corcoran brought nine Boy Scouts from Troop Ten out of Bangor to camp for the weekend at the Baker Brook Camping Area. On Saturday, the Scouts work with Paul and Steward Brian Keegstra to build two new rustic benches at the camping area.

Scouts have also helped out with various other projects since last fall, including staffing the 2013 Maine Championship Snowshoe Race January 20.

THANK YOU SCOUTS OF BUCKSPORT, BANGOR, AND ORLAND !!!!
